“5,000 years of Chinese music and dance in one night.”-The New York Times

Shen Yun shared the beautiful world of China’s divine civilization. Classic Chinese dance, ethnic and folk dances, authentic costumes, and breathtaking backdrops will do the storytelling, all accompanies by an enchanting orchestral sound. It’s a stunning experience that will leave you amazed and inspired. This show captures the spirit of a culture long lost. The show moves quickly through regions, dynasties and legends. Ethnic and folk dances fill the stage with color and energy. Tremendous athleticism, thunderous battle drums, and masterful vocalists are all set to animated backdrops that transport you to another world.

Its grand production astonishes global audiences with nearly 100 artists, 400 handmade costumes, and a live orchestra with Western and Chinese instruments. There are also stage props that help strengthen a dancer’s ability to convey intricate emotions. When used to maximum effect, they add to the dances an extra lively spark, forming stunning images of beauty and splendor onstage.

In recent years, Shen Yun dances have featured a range of unexpected props, each telling a story. Fluttering fans bloom like the petals of a delicate flower. Umbrellas twirl in refreshing drizzle. An embroidery hoop seamlessly accents a lady’s feminine grace. A well-bound book marks the learned scholar. A solitary Daoist journeys with a magical whisk. A long silk ribbon, dyed in rainbow hues, returns to the heavens as a fairy’s companion. While the young general Han Xin sports a Chinese sword known as baojian, Mulan’s warriors face enemies armed with shields and broadswords called dao. Archers train with drawn bows, and nothing radiates power like a formation of Tang dynasty men pounding their battle drums. The props, bright costumes and story-telling dances, paired with beautiful music are just a few of the elements that make this a must see show.

Find out why artists and theatergoers around the world are calling Shen Yun “breathtaking,”“mesmerizing,” “a miracle,” and “inspiring.” Allow yourself to be taken away to distant lands and ancient legends. Don’t miss Shen Yun and discover how you, too, can be inspired!

Light the candles and cut the cake! Join us Sunday, January 8 for the return of the Elvis Birthday Tribute.

Ryan Pelton as Elvis

Shawn Klush as Elvis

Cody Ray Slaughter as Elvis

This year’s Elvis Birthday Tribute stop will be its 17th consecutive year, performed on what would have been The King’s actual 81st birthday.

You will be treated to Elvis’ hits, with the tribute artists decked out in replicas of The King’s flashy wardrobe. This year’s line up features over two hours of live music starring two of the nation’s most critically-acclaimed Elvis re-creators, Shawn Klush, Ryan Pelton and Cody Ray Slaughter, each performing their entire tribute act. Joined by longtime Elvis back-up singers The Sweet Inspirations, Dove Award-winners and Elvis’ gospel family, The Blackwood Quartet and hosted by Elvis’ original drummer D.J. Fontana, who peppers the evening with intimate Elvis anecdotes. All three Elvis re-creators, Shawn, Ryan and Cody, come with impressive credentials, including rave reviews from those who personally worked with The King.

Shawn Klush has been acclaimed as the #1 Elvis performer in the country and was featured in the 1999 CBS-TV movie Shake Rattle & Roll. He was the winner of the Worldwide Elvis Competition and currently stars as “Elvis” in “Legends in Concert,” alternating in the show’s Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Branson, Seattle and Myrtle Beach venues.

Ryan Pelton’s uncanny resemblance to Elvis was noticed as far back as his pre-teen years. Even in the Marine Corps, with his head shaved, the drill instructors nicknamed him “Elvis.” Ryan went on to become the “Worldwide Elvis Impersonator Champ, Year 2000” held in Memphis.

Andy Cody Ray Slaughter, who began at only age 13 impersonating Elvis, went on to win The People’s Choice Award at the Elvis Week 2008 as part of the Images of the King Competition.

Get the Led Out rocks Cleveland!

Published September 28th, 2016 by | Comments Off on Get the Led Out rocks Cleveland!

The State Theatre will be rocking on Saturday, October 15 when Get the Led Out takes the stage! This group of professional musicians are passionate about their love of the music of Led Zeppelin. It’s been their mission to bring the studio recordings of “the mighty Zep” to life on the big concert stage. This is not an impersonator act, but rather a group of musicians who were fans first, striving to pay homage to one of the greatest bands in rock history!

You don’t want to miss this electrifying show. CLICK HERE to get your tickets now!

Like many musical groups, Led Zepplin has had an interesting journey to fame. We did some digging and found a few interesting facts about the band.

– Early on, Robert Plant attempted to buy a shirt he liked on Carnaby Street, and was asked for ID when he tried to pay with check. Without one, Plant retreated to his car and returned with a copy of Led Zeppelin’s first album as proof of his identity.

– Jimmy Page has said that their first album was recorded in 30 hours. The second album took more than eight months, largely because of non-stop touring.

knebworth79_promo_field1– Led Zeppelin II, like Zeppelin’s first album, used a vintage photograph for its cover-only this time with some key alterations. A graphic designer took a World War I-era photo that reportedly included the legendary Red Baron, then replaced the heads with those of Zeppelin band members.

– Jimmy Page didn’t always want to be a rock star. In fact, during an appearance on a 1957 episode of the U.K. children’s talent show On Your Own, a 13 year old Page said he wanted to grow up to work in biological research studying germs.

pandj-at-the-peakGet the Led Out wants to continue carrying the torch of Led Zepplin’s music. Although, you might notice that there are only 4 members of Led Zepplin, but 6 members of Get the Led Out. Their mission is to bring the studio recordings of Led Zeppelin to life in concert. In the studio, Led Zeppelin layered many guitars, vocals, keyboards, and various other instruments in a process known as “overdubbing.” Quite simply, it’s physically impossible for only 4 people to recreate those amazing recordings in a live performance. Zeppelin themselves never attempted replicating their recorded work in concert, as it would have required hiring additional musicians, and they just weren’t about that. Get The Led Out however, is ALL about that!

FUN FACT: Get the Led Out’s very own Paul Sinclair had the pleasure of lending his vocals to the pilot episode of the new Martin Scorsese – Mick Jagger produced HBO TV series Vinyl. The show is all about the record business in early 1970s New York.

Inspiring Acts of Kindness at PlayhouseSquare

Published December 22nd, 2014 by | Comments Off on Inspiring Acts of Kindness at PlayhouseSquare

It”s the season of giving and it seems that no matter what you are celebrating, there is always a time to celebrate the gifts of giving and kindness. As we are nearing the end of a great year and beginning to reflect on all that it was, we wanted to share a story that seemed to reflect the spirit of the giving season.

Story courtesy of PlayhouseSquare cast member Jim Kraizel; written by cast member Kelsey Tomlinson.

It was Sunday afternoon, the last day Motown the Musical was in town, that Jim Kraizel found himself outside the State Theatre. Jim is one of our Group Services Account Executives, and he was greeting motor coaches that regularly shuttle groups to the theater.

The show was about to start, and one last motor coach pulled up and began to unload. A night at the theater is often a dressy affair, so imagine Jim’s surprise when amidst all these elegantly-clad theater-goers, a much more casually-dressed couple stepped off the bus.

As it turns out, this motor coach arrived so close to curtain because it had been lost! Circling around Tremont, it caught the attention of a couple taking an afternoon walk. They graciously online casino hopped on board and took it upon themselves to direct the motor coach to PlayhouseSquare, allowing all those people to make it to the show on time.

That’s an inspiring performance in and of itself, but there’s more to it! That couple taking a walk in Tremont was none other than Amo & Margy Judd. Not only are they season ticket holders, but Margy is a member of the PlayhouseSquare Board of Trustees. They were thrilled that the motor coach was headed to PlayhouseSquare, and wanted to ensure that everyone aboard had the best possible time in Cleveland.

Thank you, Margy and Amo Judd, for being excellent ambassadors for PlayhouseSquare and Cleveland. Your random act of kindness saved the day!

If you receive or witness an inspiring act of kindness within our theaters, be sure to post it on our Facebook page or tweet us at @PlayhouseSquare using the hashtag #InspiringPerformance.
