Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark ends Broadway run, moving to Las Vegas in 2014

Happening on Broadway …

Once featured on “Out of Ireland”
The Broadway production of Once, as well as the national tour, will be featured on Out of Ireland on Sunday November 24 at 11:30 a.m. on PBS. The piece will feature interviews with Arthur Darvill and Anne Nathan from the Broadway production. The national tour of Once ends its engagement at PlayhouseSquare on Sunday, November 24.  (outofirelandtv.com) Read more.  

Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark to fly off to Vegas in 2014
Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark is set to close on January 4, 2014 and will fly off to Last Vegas. No dates have been set for the Vegas engagement of the show. Spider-Man, Turn Off The Dark opened on Broadway January 14, 2011 and will have played1,268 performances by the time it closes.   (broadway.com) Read more.

Tony Winner Sutton Foster to make Broadway return in 2014
Tony Winner Sutton Foster is making a return to Broadway in spring 2014 in Violet. Foster previously performed in Violet, directed by Leigh Silverman, in July for a one-night-only engagement at New York City Center’s Encores! Off-Center. Violet is set in the deep South of 1964 and concerns the relationship between a physically scarred young white woman and a young black soldier.  (broadway.com) Read more.

Broadway Idiot available for pre-order; set to be released on December 9
Broadway Idiot, the documentary that follows the creation of American Idiot, the musical based off the album of the same name by Green Day is available now for pre-order. According to a new announcement, the DVD will contain over 20 minutes of deleted scenes, as well as an 8-page collectible booklet with new and behind-the-scenes shots from the creation of the Broadway show and documentary. American Idiot will be at PlayhouseSquare as part of the U.S. Bank Star Performance Series April 25-27. (broadwaynews.com) Read more.

National tour cast of Once announced
The national tour of Once, which comes to PlayhouseSquare November 12-24 has been announced! The national tour cast includes Stuart Ward as Guy (Once – West End) and Dani De Waal as Girl (Picnic, Mamma Mia! – West End). Based on the 2006 film, Once features a score by the movie’s stars and Academy Award-winning composers for “Falling Slowly,” Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. The show won eight Tony Awards, including honors for Tiffany and Best Musical.  (playhousesquare.org) Read more.

Happening on Broadway …

Mamma Mia! remains top grossing recent musical movie
Broadway musicals turned into movies or movies turned into Broadway musicals is a popular trend. Of the musical movies released in the last ten years, Mamma Mia! holds the title for top grossing film. Released in 2008 and starring Meryl Streep among its cast, the film grossed $609,841,637, beating out other musical movies including Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Dreamgirls, The Producers and Rent.  Mamma Mia! runs July 13 – July 22 at PlayhouseSquare.

John Stamos, Cybill Shepherd & Kristin Davis star in The Best Man
Stage and screen stars John Stamos, Cybill Shepherd and Kristin Davis joined the cast of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man this week. Stamos succeeds Eric McCormack as Senator Joseph Cantwell, Shepherd replaces Candic Bergen as Alice Russell and David replaces Kerry Butler as Mabel Cantwell. The Best Man will play a limited engagement through September 9.

Tony Winner Nina Arianda in talks to join two films
Nina Arianda, who won a 2012 Tony Awards for Venus in Fur, is in talks to star in two different films: The Disappearance of Eleanor Ribgy and Joplin. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby is set to be directed by Ned Benson and would consist of two parts, His and Hers – these stories would be told from the perspective of a husband and wife. After Rigby, Arianda is rumored to move on to play Janis Joplin in the biopic, Joplin.

Once star Cristin Milioti confirmed to join cast of The Wolf on Wall Street
Once’s Cristin Milioti has confirmed that she will appear in the upcoming Martin Scorsese film The Wolf of Wall Street. Milioti will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, Johan Hill and Jean Dujardin. The Wolf of Wall Street will “chronicle the dramatic Wall Street rise and fall of former New York Stockbroker Jordan Belfort.

Cinema at the Square returns to PlayhouseSquare

The 15th Annual Cinema at the Square Series returns to the Palace Theatre at PlayhouseSquare this summer August 2-19. Join us as we watch thirteen classic films the way they were meant to be seen…on the largest non-Imax screen in Ohio. Once and Clybourne Park  take home top honors at 66th Annual Tony Awards

Once and Clybourne Park took home the top honors at the 66th Annual Tony Awards on June 10. Once took home 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Book of a Musical, Direction of a Musical, Orchestration and Sound Design. Clybourne Park took home the award for Best Play. Al Pacino headed for Broadway

A new revival of David Mamet’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Glengarry Glen Ross, is in the works for Broadway, with Al Pacino slated to play desperate salesman Shelly Levene. This would be quite the switch for Pacino, who starred in the 1992 film adaptation of Glengarry in a different role, Ricky Roma. Pacino received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the film.

Closing date set for Anything Goes

The Broadway revival of Anything Goes  will officially close on Broadway on August 5. The production opened April 7, 2011 and won three 2011 Tony awards: Best Revival of a Musical, Best Choreography for director/choreographer Kathleen Marshall and Best Actress in a Musical for Sutton Foster. The national tour of Anything Goes kicks off October 5 at PlayhouseSquare, as part of the KeyBank Broadway Series.

Once, Nice Work If You Can Get It, announce national tours

Once, which recently earned 11 Tony nominations and Nice Work If You Can Get It, which recently earned 10 Tony nominations, have both announced they are set for national tours in 2013. Dates and cities for the national tours have yet to be announced.

Charlie Chaplin Musical, Chaplin, set to open on Broadway

Chaplin, the new musical depicting the life of silent film star Charlie Chaplin, will begin performances August 21 at the Barrymore Theatre with opening night set for September 10. The musical will be directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle (Finian’s Rainbow) and features music and lyrics by Christopher Curtis and a book by Curtis and Tony winner Thomas Meehan (The Producers). No casting has been announced at this time.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Leap of Faith to end Broadway run

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Leap of Faith have both announced they will end their Broadway run. How to Succeed in Business will end its Broadway run May 20, after 30 preview and 473 regular performances and Leap of Faith will end its Broadway run on May 13 after 24 preview and 20 regular performances.

The 2012 Tony Award nominees were announced on May 1. Once garnered the most nominations (11); Porgy and Bess, Nice Work If You Can Get It and Peter and the Starcatcher also received numerous nominations. You can see a full list of nominees here.

Scarlett Johansson set to return to Broadway

Scarlett Johansson is in talks to return to Broadway in fall 2012 as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. “I’m close to making a deal on it,” Johansson said. “I can not wait absolutely to get to it. I’m exhilarated, I’m terrified, but I think in a good way.” Johansson earned a Tony Award for her Broadway debut performance in A View From the Bridge.

Hugh Jackman and Bernadette Peters to receive special Tony Awards

Hugh Jackman and Bernadette Peters will receive special Tony Awards at the 2012 Tony Awards. Jackman is being honored with the Special Award for his contributions to the Broadway community, both as a performer and a humanitarian. Peters is set to receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award for her work with her animal charity Broadway Barks.

Happening on Broadway …

Sacha Baron Cohen and Helen Bonham Carter join cast of upcoming Les Miserables movie

Les Miserables (the movie) is set to begin production in February 2012, with a star-studded cast including Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. Sacha Baron Cohen (best known for Borat) and Helen Bonham Carter (Sweeny Todd, Harry Potter) are also joining the cast in the roles of Monsieur Thénardier and Madame Thénardier.

Once moving on up to Broadway

Once, based off the movie of the same name, is moving on up to Broadway starting February 28, 2012. Originally intended to be performed off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop, Once will open in mid-February, starring Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti.

Broadway heading to TV’s Modern Family

Emmy winner Bobby Cannavale (Will and Grace, Sex and the City) and Tony winner Ellen Barkin (The Normal Heart) will guest star on TV’s Modern Family in early 2012. Cannavale will star as Louis, former partner of Fizbo, the alter ego of Cam (Eric Stonestreet). Barkin will play Vera, a tough-as-nails real estate broker who becomes enemies with Phil (Ty Burrell).

Broadway shows coming to the big screen

NYC and London-based Supervision Media and New York’s Broadway Worldwide are bringing four Broadway musicals to the big screen—Memphis, Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical, Sondheim’s Putting It Together and Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stroller. Fans worldwide will be able to enjoy the Broadway shows, starting this November.

Diner opening on Broadway

A musical version of Diner–originally by Barry Levinson—is headed to Broadway next year. The 1982 comedy about a group of friends growing up in Baltimore in 1959 has been re-worked with the help of music and lyrics from Sheryl Crow, along with Barry Levinson, who directed the original film and earned an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay and choreography from Tony-Award winner Kathleen Marshall.

Stage version of Once headed to Broadway?

Indie-flick Once, which chronicles the story of a street musician and a Czech immigrant who meet in Dublin and develop a relationship through music, may be heading to Broadway following its upcoming off-Broadway run. Show producers Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. and Wilson Fred Zollo are reportedly a Broadway transfer of the show in February 2012.
