The start of September usually marks both a beginning and an end to things—the beginning of a new school year, and the beginning of fall, while also marking the end of summer. While the end of summer draws near, the PlayhouseSquare District celebrates with its 12th Annual Block Party & Tour on Friday, September 9.
The end of the summer party celebration, held on Star Plaza, includes a wide variety of activities for guests to participate in—starting with the entertainment. Guests will enjoy the sounds of the 60′s with The PopTarts and rock out to the 80′s with Britton Roberts and The Jones, presented by the Downtown Cleveland Alliance.
Also going on at the Block Party is the PlayhouseSquare Cornhole Championship Game, the grand finale of competition between 41 different teams-prizes will be awarded for the overall winner, runner-up and best team name. The teams that will be competing at the Block Party are A Dingo Ate My Bean Bag from URS, It’s In the Hole from URS, Hole Enchilada from Turner Construction/Medical Mutual and Million Dollar Corntet from PlayhouseSquare Foundation.
While enjoying the music, and cornhole competition, guests can also partake in a cash bar, as well as food from the eight PlayhouseSquare restaurants, and Johnsonville Sausage and Shearer’s.
Making its debut at the Block Party is a new project called ‘The ShopBox.’ The ShopBox is a part of the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program made possible through the CLEVELANDtm partnership. Designed by Crisitan Schmitt, the Shopbox is a mobile retail space that hosts commercial or recreational activities temporarily in various locations. Guests can visit the ShopBox for a drink, and to learn more about its creation and uses.
“The PlayhouseSquare Block Party has developed into a true neighborhood event supported by our area restaurants and businesses plus, it’s a great way for people to get to know each other, network, and simply enjoy the area they work in everyday,” stated Tom Einhouse, Executive Vice President of PlayhouseSquare Real Estate Services.
As part of the walking tour of the neighborhood by the Take a Hike guides, those on the tour will get a sneak peek at the renovations of the Allen Theatre, future home of the Cleveland Play House, as well as a Dance Showcase performance in the Palace Theatre.
Jackie York, District Development Marketing Manager at PlayhouseSquare, who has coordinated the Block Party for the past 12 years, says the event is always changing, and always evolving. “It’s a great way of networking, catching up with friends and co-workers, and having a great time” she said. “It’s about engaging participation and learning about the area.”
