Superhero Sundays

Published August 20th, 2011 by | No Comments

Each Sunday during the Cinema at the Square series, guests are treated to superhero favorites on the big screen in the Palace Theatre as part of “Superhero Sundays.” The series ends this Sunday with a not-to-be-missed showing of the 2002 version of Spider-man.

In addition to the pre-show organ recitals given at each Cinema presentation, guests on Superhero Sundays have even more opportunities to celebrate these classics.

Local vintage toy store Star Pop is sponsoring each of the Sunday presentations, and the store’s owner Troy Schwartz put together a special display in the Palace Theatre lobby to celebrate the series.

The collection you see in the display case is just about a three-way split between items from Troy’s personal collection, items from the Star Pop store and items specifically sought out to complement the series’ film selections.

Once Troy knows the films, he said he will keep an eye out and set aside good toys that come through the store. For some of the more difficult films to pair, he said the search for related vintage items begins months before the series.

The collection for this year’s series includes everything from miniature blue suede shoes to a Cleopatra vinyl record, with lots of action figures and other childhood treasures in-between–even a Jaws game where players have to grab items out of the giant shark’s mouth before the teeth shut on them (pictured right).

You can check out the awesome collection of vintage toys related to the series at any of the Cinema at the Square shows, but there are added bonuses to visiting on Sunday: The first 50 people to visit Troy at the StarPop display on Superhero Sunday will receive a free pack of vintage superhero trading cards!

Visitors on Superhero Sundays also have the opportunity to meet representatives from the Siegel and Shuster Society and learn about the petition they are currently working on to get a Superman license plate created for the state of Ohio. The organization, which has worked on other projects related to honoring the Cleveland-born Superman creators, needs 500 signatures from Ohio drivers to get the legislation proposed in the State Senate.
