Girl Scouts in Northeast Ohio seem to love Broadway.
After all, three to five thousand girls attend shows at PlayhouseSquare with their troops each year, and last weekend more than 2,000 girls and 800 moms attended a Broadway-themed sleepover at SouthPark Mall in Strongsville.
This is the eighth year the mall has put on the sleepover, but with this year’s Broadway theme, we got involved for the first time. And the timing couldn’t have been better: With Shrek the Musical coming to town, this was the perfect time to engage the younger theater-going crowd.
Before the sleepover, troops participated in a contest where they created a Shrek-themed banner to be displayed at the mall. If you’ve been to Southpark Mall in the past week, you may have seen them; if you haven’t, check them out before the end of the week! The winning troop (pictured above) won tickets to the show.
Throughout the evening, the scouts continued to indulge in Broadway fun – participating in a Shrek-themed scavenger hunt, watching movie musicals and more. They also learned about our programs for Girl Scouts – where they have the opportunity to earn a patch by attending some of our KeyBank Broadway Series and Children’s Theater Series shows.
