Happening on Broadway …

Off Broadway raking in success of Broadway hits
Producers are finding that much like in television, there’s plenty of money in Broadway re-runs. The trend began with Avenue Q, where after a run on Broadway, a scaled-down production ran Off-Broadway; the same is set to happen with Rent this summer. Producers say it gives visibility to Off Broadway, while allowing shows to continue to make money after they’ve exhausted their initial run.

James Earl Jones signs on for Broadway revival
A revival of Gore Vidal’s The Best Man, a play chronicling a contentious presidential election, will premiere on Broadway in Spring 2012, just in time for that year’s presidential election. Tony Award winner (and movie and TV star) James Earl Jones has signed on to play an ex-president whose endorsement plays a part in the show’s drama.
