Marching from the field to the stage

Published February 1st, 2011 by | No Comments

The fall nights of college and high school football games may seem long gone amid all this snow. But you don’t have to wait until fall for the choreographed steps and brass melodies of marching bands to entertain you; they’ll be coming here this Thursday, Feb. 3.

As Drumline Live marches into Cleveland, audiences will be treated to show-style marching routines made famous by Florida A&M University, long considered the nation’s preeminent black college marching band school.

Producers of the 2002 20th Century Fox hit movie Drumline created Drumline Live. The movie tells the story of a young Harlem man who enrolls in a southern university to lead the marching band to victory, while the live show puts a spotlight on marching band routines to tunes from all ages.

The show-stopping routines put their own spin on everything from ancient rhythms of Africa to Michael Jackson, and big band music to modern hip-hop. Glee fans, take note; you may consider this “Glee on brass.”
