These items can be found in almost any brown bag lunch …
And these are a must-have for almost any party …
But in May, they’ll be displayed as art here ….
Last week, local teachers gathered in the Idea Center at PlayhouseSquare to begin brainstorming ideas for the Art Walk, a new component of the International Children’s Festival, which is in its second year.
Wendy Mahon, a local artist, got their creative juices flowing by showing them how to make flowers, trees and animals out of everything from pop cans to plastic bags. The teachers will bring these ideas back to their classrooms, where their students will create artwork to be on display throughout the district at the International Children’s Festival.
All of the artwork will center on the theme of creativity around the globe — what human beings need to sustain life and what kinds of creative expression are shared among different cultures. Students in grades 1-5 will then create artwork on a four-by-eight foot board using only recycled materials to convey this message.
At the workshop session, we saw a tree made out of plastic forks, animals made out of drink lids and flower gardens made of chip bags. We can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with for our displays!
