Happening on Broadway
European cruise puts spotlight on Broadway entertainment
The cruise line Regent Seven Seas Cruises has announced the entertainment lineup for its premier voyage of the cruise Broadway on the High Seas: Audra McDonald, Christine Ebersole and Norm Lewis. Playbill.com columnist Seth Rudetsky will also serve as host and musical director of the ship setting sail in Rome on Sept. 13, 2011.
Lion King to become seventh-longest running Broadway show
The Lion King will start 2011 off on a high note as it becomes the seventh-longest running Broadway show when it reaches 5,462 performances on January 2, 2011. Coincidentally, it will surpass Beauty and the Beast, and become the longest-running Disney show. It has won six Tony Awards in its thirteen-year-and-counting run.
The show must go on
The east coast snowstorm didn’t halt Broadway shows this week – though it did take a hit on usually-high tourism during the last two weeks of the year. Many popular productions offered “snow day” discounts to those who dared to brave the storm, and many theaters are allowing patrons to exchange their Sunday and Monday tickets for a later performance.
PlayhouseSquare in the News…
Plain Dealer theater critic Tony Brown called this year the busiest Cleveland theater season in his 11 years on the job. In a column, he cites PlayhouseSquare’s Allen Theatre renovation announcement among the top news of the year, and August: Osage County, Billy Elliot the Musical and Blue Man Group as top performances.
